About Greenleaf Power
Hugh Smith, President
As President, Hugh Smith oversees more than 150 employees and five biomass plants that generate in excess of 140 megawatts of power. Hugh brings more than 30 years of experience in the energy field to the position.
Prior to joining Greenleaf Power, Hugh served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Renegy Holdings, a renewable energy company focused on the conversion of biomass to electricity. In that capacity, Hugh piloted the company as it built its first biomass power plant.
He also worked as Senior Vice President of Energy Resources for PNM Resources, overseeing all facets of its generation portfolio. In this role, Hugh developed independent power projects, acquired several generating plants, directed the construction of power generation facilities and environmental upgrade projects, and managed the operations of a fleet of more than 2,500 megawatts of power generation assets.
Prior to joining PNM Resources, Hugh served as Vice President of Energy Supply for Tampa Electric Company. In his 24 years with Tampa Electric Company, Hugh worked in operations, environmental, fuel supply, and strategic planning roles.
Hugh has been engaged in the development of renewable resources for years and served on the Electric Power Research Institute’s Research Advisory Committee addressing progressive technologies to reduce emissions of CO2. He also worked on the New Mexico Governor’s Task Force for Climate Change.
Hugh Smith received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida.
Charles Abbott, Chief Operating Officer
Charles Abbott joined Greenleaf Power in 2011 as the Senior Vice President of Operations and Construction. In his current role of Chief Operating Officer, Charles oversees the day-to-day operations of our facilities and constantly evaluates technologies to improve their performance.
Prior to joining Greenleaf Power, Charles cofounded Fairlead Advisors LLC, which provided strategic, commercial, valuation and technical expertise to private equity clients.
Charles was also the Chief Operating Officer of the Trigen companies from 2005 to 2008. In that capacity, he was responsible for the execution of the business plan including day-to-day management and internal growth of the business. He also served in various capacities for the Trigen Companies since 1993 from Vice President District Energy Assets to Manager of Operations in Philadelphia.
Charles also served as Plant Director for Orlando Utilities Commission’s Indian River Plant and as a field service engineer for Foster Wheeler.
Charles Abbott received a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Vermont and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Denver. He is a registered professional engineer in Texas.
Robert Pennington, Chief Financial Officer
Rob Pennington joined Greenleaf Power in 2010 as Director of Finance. In his current role of Vice President of Finance , Rob evaluates opportunities for expansion of the Greenleaf platform through acquisitions and investment in new biomass power projects.
Prior to joining Greenleaf Power, Rob worked at Recycled Energy Development where he focused on financial and commercial aspects of acquisition and development activities in the biomass and cogeneration sectors.
Rob previously worked at Conway, Del Genio, Gries & Co., an investment firm providing financial advisory and interim management. Prior to that, he worked as an investment banker at Deutsche Bank, providing to transactional services to the basic industrial sector.
Rob received a Bachelor of Arts degree with Distinction in Economics and Environmental Sciences from the University of Virginia and an MBA with High Distinction from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
Russell Huffman, Vice President of CA Operations
Russell Huffman joined Greenleaf Power in 2010 as the General Manager of Desert View Power. In his current role as Vice President of CA Operations, Russell is responsible for the safe and profitable operation of Greenleaf's California biomass power plant's portfolio.
Prior to joining Greenleaf Power, Russell managed the Burbank Water & Power generation portfolio. Russell has more than thirty-five years of experience in the operation and management of solid fuel fired power plants. From 2003 - 2009, he was the plant manager of Public Service Company of New Mexico's San Juan Generating Station; a four unit, 1,800 megawatt, coal fired power plant.
Russell has an Associate of Applied Science in Engineering Technology from San Juan College, and a Postgraduate Certificate of Business Administration from Heriot-Watt University - Edinburgh Business School.
Rob Crummett, Director of Fuel Procurement
Rob Crummett has over 18 years of experience in the biomass fuel procurement business in the Northwest. He has held various roles in the wood procurement business purchasing; biomass, pulp logs, wood chips, saw logs, pulp, and composite board furnish. Prior joining Greenleaf, Rob worked for Wheelabrator, SierraPine and Georgia-Pacific. He has a B.S. Degree in Forest Management from Humboldt State University, and is a Registered Professional Forester in the State of California.
